LATHAM, N.Y. – Two New York members of Congress, both members of the House Financial Services Committee, co-authored, signed and circulated a “Dear Colleague” letter prior to the Nov. 3rd Ways and Means Committee credit union tax hearing, urging support for the continuation of the credit union tax-exemption. The letter from Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D) and Peter King (R) and addressed to Committee Chairman Bill Thomas (R-Calif.) and Ranking Member Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), advocated for the tax-exempt status of credit unions they were granted by Congress in 1937. Adding their signature to the letter “to maintain the present tax structure for credit unions that Congress has always found to strike the best balance for the financial services sector” were New York Representatives Timothy Bishop (D), Sherwood Boehlert (R), Joseph Crowley (D), Eliot Engle (D), Carolyn McCarthy (D), Gregory Meeks (D) and John Sweeney (R).
