EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Responding with unusual generosity, two Evansville credit unions have contributed $20,000 to aid the victims of the Nov. 6 tornado that ravaged southern Indiana killing 22. “The tornado hit some of our members pretty hard and so our board felt the $10,000 donation was a way of doing what we could to help,” explained Shannon Bradley, senior vice president of the $285 million Heritage FCU of Newburg. The $10,000 was directed to a local chapter of the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, said Bradley noting also the amount was probably the largest the Heritage board had extended in time of disaster. Separately, the $500 million Evansville Teachers FCU said it also contributed $10,000 to the American Red Cross. Both CUs made their donations during a local TV telethon which raised $1 million days after the tornado hit. Both CUs had undamaged branches within miles of the tornado’s destructive path, said the officials. Both Evansville CUs are now waiving fees, reducing rates and offering special terms for tornado victims. “When you look at the devastation, you realize the $10,000 is a drop in the bucket,” commented Bradley. Evansville Teachers said it is continuing to collect employee and member donations at boxes stationed in its nine offices. [email protected]
