WASHINGTON. – Since gas prices have risen again in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, hybrid vehicles have regained popularity. Unlike first-generation electrical cars that had to be plugged in for recharging and offered limited acceleration and top speeds, hybrids use gasoline and electric power together. The result is a vehicle similar to others on the road, but with higher gas mileage. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the hybrid vehicle with the highest gas mileage rating is the Honda Insight, at 63 MPG. The popular Toyota Prius gets 55 MPG, followed by the Honda Civic and Honda Accord, at 48 MPG and 33 MPG each. Given the continued popularity of SUVs, automakers have introduced hybrid versions of current SUV models, including the Ford Escape, Toyota Highlander and Lexus RX400H.
