FITCHBURG, Mass. – Workers’ Credit Union is helping its members minimize their identity theft risks by hosting a free ID Theft seminar. Featuring Boston-based personal security consultant Robert L. Siciliano, the seminar focused on increasing awareness of the growing threat of identity theft and offered practical tips and the best line of defense against identity theft. Over 100 members attended the free event. “This seminar helps our credit union members and the community to be proactive in dealing with the growing threat of identity theft,” said Workers’ CU President/CEO Frederick D. Healey. According to Siciliano, identity theft will cost businesses and consumers $48 billion this year, with the average victim losing $6,700. In addition to the financial loss, victims of fraudulent activity can spend up to 175 hours over a one-year period cleaning up their records. In addition to the time and aggravation, out of pocket expenses can easily top $20,000.
