TILLAMOOK, Ore. – TLC FCU has gone one step further in helping hurricane evacuees reunite with their families. A “Families Reunited” fund was recently opened at the $74 million CU sparked by a call from Kevin Miller, a retired firefighter who is also a member. Dianne Burkhart, chief operations officer for TLC FCU, listened to the member’s idea of firefighters getting together to help reunite families that have been scattered across the country due to Hurricane Katrina. Miller had been in New Orleans helping with recovery efforts when he met two women who became separated from their children. The women, who literally lost everything except the clothes on their back, were desperately trying to reunite with their children in Seattle and Missouri, respectively. TLC FCU not only helped the firefighters open the Families Reunited account but the credit union also paid for airfare for both women to be reunited with their children. Donations will continue to be accepted into the account, which will be earmarked for helping other family members reunite, the CU said.
