WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – Banks and credit unions in the tri-city area of North Carolina are counting the damage in the wake of a European-style skimming attack on their customers and members' ATM cards. The Winston-Salem Journal reported that at least 700 bank and credit union cardholders ranging from BB&T and Wachovia banks to the $1 billion Truliant FCU, the $1 billion Allegacy FCU and the $13 billion State Employees Credit Union, had all reported losses. The cardholders reported that their money was sent to Valencia, Spain and St. Petersburg, Russia indicating that, like the European skimming cases, there was an international aspect to the incident. Skimmers often attach devices to ATMs and use cameras to record people's personal identification numbers. They then use that information to manufacture counterfeit cards that they use to steal money from the accounts. The story also reported that bank customers were being told they had to wait between five and 10 days to have their lost funds restored whereas credit union members were told they would be made whole within 24 hours after the report.
