HARBOR, Ore. – Chetco Federal Credit Union has connected with younger members by hosting the first ever skateboard competition at Brookings Skate Park. Skaters ranged from ages six to 18 each performing a two-minute skate routine. The top 10 skaters made up of the five best from both the 6-12 group and the 13-18 group advance to the second and final round and the final top three skaters from each group rolls away a winner. Winning prizes included gift certificates of $100, $75 and $50 for skateboard gear. The event was designed to showcase those dedicated to the sport of skateboarding. With an eye on safety, all skaters were required to wear helmets, elbow and knee pads. CFCU provided elbow and knee pads for those who needed them. Over 100 people were on hand for the event to cheer skaters on. Skaters who made it to the second round automatically qualified as winners and skated for overall placement for first through third place prizes. “The skate comp was a success in that it gave local kids, a chance to shine, creating positive attention to the youth who are committed to skate boarding and spending their free time at the skate park,” said Chetco FCU AVP/Marketing Judy May-Lopez. “We look forward to hosting another skateboard competition next year.”
