NEW CASTLE, Del. – The New Jersey Credit Union League has applied to join the Mid-Atlantic Regional Service Corporation in order to allow its member credit unions to get the same break on Allpoint pricing as other MARS leagues, according to the Delaware Credit Union League. Allpoint is the nationwide ATM network which provides fee-free access to over 32,000 ATMs to members of credit unions which pay a flat fee according to the size of their enrolled card base. The machines belong to the Houston-based Cardtronics, the nation’s largest independent deployer of ATMs and are usually found in gas stations, convenience stores or other retailers. The Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, District of Columbia and West Virginia leagues are already MARS members. Robert Walls, CEO of the New Jersey Credit Union League, explained that the League had opted out from the creation of MARS in 1995 but had since come around after credit unions seeking to join Allpoint discovered how much better their pricing would be if their league joined MARS rather than if they approached Allpoint individually. MARS had initially started as a lending center which, Walls reported, became very successful and then was sold to the Texas Credit Union League. Since then the company has offered member league’s credit unions special pricing on deluxe checks and, this year, a special price for members seeking to join Allpoint. In addition to the 32,000 machines across the country, Walls noted that Allpoint had almost 1,000 machines in New Jersey and drawn a good deal of interest from the state’s credit unions.
