Looking back seven years ago finds some 6,000 people descending on the Capitol to make one last impassioned plea in support of the passage of the Credit Union Membership Access Act (H.R. 1151). “We have not had a credit union gathering like this since 1991 when Operation Grassroots assembled in response to a threat to our share insurance fund,” said NAFCU Board Chairman Jim Guretzky. “This rally is ample evidence that our cause is just and that we stand on the threshold of success. HR 1151 is good for consumers.” President Bill Clinton also supported the bill and urged Congress to do the same. “I urge the senate to pass this bill without weighing it down with extraneous and controversial amendments that would seriously jeopardize this legislation,” said Clinton. Rick Miller of AT&T Family FCU described the rally as “a harmonic convergence of credit unionland.” “You wouldn’t get 6,000 people together for a rally in a few days just for one credit union. This is about more than just AT&T. It’s about the future of all credit unions and consumers’ freedom of choice,” said Miller.
