CLOVIS, N.M. – Under the gun for a possible base closing, the $30 million Cannon Federal Credit Union said last week it has joined a vigorous community letter-writing campaign aimed at federal lawmakers and the U.S. Defense Department to turn back closing of Cannon Air Force Base here. “We have displays in our branches and we even provided stamped envelopes to our members to write our Congressmen,” said Diane Antill, president/CEO who was one of scores of civic leaders who took part in a June 24 rally and hearing held here by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The rally complete with flag-waving, music, parades and speeches included remarks by Gov. Bill Richardson supporting the community’s efforts to keep Cannon open despite Defense Department recommendations.
