Pete Crear is a Great Guy, But a World Leader?

My sincere and personal thanks to publisher Mike Welch for his clear and fair assessment of Pete Crear’s elevation to CEO of the World Council of Credit Unions in his June 8th column. In my opinion, his resources for this particularly unique position are realistically a mile wide and an inch thick. Crear is faced with attempting to board a fast moving freight train, complicated by the presence of fog and slippery surfaces. His finely honed hale fellow, well-met persona (indeed, a talent), even though genuine, is no substitute for what the job requires. A crash course in how to better understand the role of government as something more than a dispenser of goodies would be helpful. New and complex dimensions await Crear in such areas as the underserved, affordable housing, government corruption, and many pressures from lest likely sources. I have known Pete since his salad days as an employee of the Michigan Credit Union League, an entity by the way to which he contributed much to make it one of the best. I admire him for his on-going self-confidence while moving up the career ladder. However, this admirable quality should never be confused with whistling while walking through someone’s cemetery.
