WASHINGTON – Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) was to be among the recipients of service awards that were scheduled to be presented by the Consumer Federation of America at its 35th Annual Awards Dinner last Wednesday. Shelby will receive the Philip Hart Public Service Award. Since entering the Senate in 1986, the CFA says Shelby "has combined conservative values with a commitment to consumer protection on a number of important issues, including the need for transparent and competitive markets, investor rights, and personal privacy." As chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Shelby held a series of comprehensive hearing in response to the mutual fund scandals. He also helped steer to passage changes to the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Other scheduled award recipients are Connecticut Attorney General Robert Blumenthal who will also receive the Philip Hart Public Service Award; journalist Michelle Singletary, the Betty Furness Consumer Media Service Award; consumer advocate Carol Tucker Foreman, the Esther Peterson Consumer Service Award; and consumer advocate Walter Dartland, the Esther Peterson Consumer Service Award.
