PALM DESERT, Calif. – CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica and U.S. Central President/CEO Dan Kampen are rookie golfers to say the least, but that didn’t stop them from squaring off for charity. The two CU leaders partnered with two more experienced golfers and participated in a golfing challenge dubbed the “Duel in the Desert”, organized by technology CUSO Open Financial Solutions, Inc. The event raised more than $200,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network. It coincided with the Credit Union Routable Meeting and thus had a number of large CU spectators. Mica paired up with Suncoast Schools FCU CEO Tom Dorety and Kampen partnered with WesCorp CEO Bob Siravo. The Mica/Dorety team won the golf event by just one stroke, while the Kampen/Siravo tandem won the fund raising challenge by a substantial margin. A number of big name CUs and organizations sponsored the event, including CUNA Mutual, BECU, Bellco CU, First Tech CU, Liberty, Southwest Corporate, Suncoast Schools, WesCorp Mountain America CU, Orange County Teachers FCU and others. Sure to Hall of Famer Tim Brown, the longtime receiver for the Oakland Raiders, was in attendance as spokesperson for CMN.
