MILWAUKEE – Greater Milwaukee Credit Union President/CEO Lori A. Pook says when you see a dog make a mistake in a dog show or agility contest very often it can be the human’s fault. Pook has been on the dog agility circuit in Wisconsin since 1998. Her current pride and joy is Solo, a five-year old golden retriever that has a few agility titles to his name. Pook calls him Solo, but his show name is Solo’s Fancy Flight. Pook says aspects of dog agility training definitely correlate to her career. “It pretty much is a coaching thing. If you turn your shoulder the wrong way, if you make a mistake, the dog will,” said Pook. If as CEO, people don’t know what direction she wants, they too can make mistakes. Before Pook can train the dog, she has to be trained. Pook works out once a week for an hour with with a personal trainer who teaches her how to command the dog. “Basically I’m the one being trained. It can be pretty tiring if you have a fast dog,” she said. Agility shows are held in a ring that is 100 feet by 100 feet and consist of a series of obstacles for the dog to maneuver around, on, up and over. “Not every dog can do it, not every dog wants to do it. If you want to spend the time, it really helps with the obedience of the dog. Having an enthusiastic dog makes it easy,” said Pook. Solo is so enthusiastic that he often barks out of excitement during the exercise. “He’s just so happy. It’s a big bonding event,” she said. [email protected]
