SAN ANTONIO – As grand prizewinners of the San Antonio Federal Credit Union (SACU) and Magic 105.3 sponsored High Five Readers Challenge, Mrs. Grills’ first graders from Encino Park Elementary School were treated to a special visit by San Antonio Spurs Guard Brent Barry. Appearing at Fire Station 46, Barry read “Dot the Fire Dog” by Lisa Desimini. In addition, fire fighters taught the children about fire safety and let them tour the fire station, which included getting on the big red fire truck. Each child also received a copy of the Desimini book and had an opportunity to get autographs from Barry and the firemen. The High Five Readers Challenge is designed to help students in first through fifth grade exercise their imaginations by spending more of their free time reading. The NBA’s Read to Achieve program is a year-round campaign to help young people develop a life-long love for reading and to encourage adults to read regularly with children. A strong supporter of education and literacy, SACU execs believe that it is especially important for San Antonio to embrace literacy, due to the recent findings from the “America’s Most Literate Cities” study which ranked San Antonio 75th out of 79 cities across the country. SACU is also the “Official Credit Union of the San Antonio Spurs.”
