WASHINGTON – Internet auction fraud was by far the most heavily reported online crime to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) in 2004, according to a new report from the joint venture of the National White Collar Crime Center and the FBI. Those who reported the highest dollar losses, however, fell for check fraud, Nigerian letter fraud and confidence fraud. Total incidents reported to the IC3 and referred to enforcement agencies in 2004 totaled 190,143, a 64.2% increase over the 63,316 referred in 2003. The charts here show some of the findings of the “IC3 2004 Internet Fraud Crime Report” just released by the NWCC and the FBI.
