ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – More kids will get a better education in American political and cultural history from colonial times, thanks to grant of support provided by a credit union card services group. PSCU Financial Services, the card servicing cooperative that serves 500 credit unions that process their card transactions with First Data Corp., has donated $50,000 for the second year in a row to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The non-profit Foundation operates the restored 301-acrea site that replicates American life in Colonial Times in Williamsburg, Virginia and produces educational materials related to the period and to the founding of the United States. This year First Data Corp. matched PSCU's donation to total $100,000. Half the money will be used to conduct electronic field trips for students. The other half will go to underwrite the new Credit Union Week at the Foundation's Williamsburg Teacher Institute. The support allows 25 teachers to attend – at no charge a week long seminar at the Institute during which they learn innovative methods for teaching history and government. "Since our founding fathers established the democratic freedoms that we enjoy as both individuals and as corporations, we believe that sponsoring outstanding educational programs like these is an ideal way for credit unions to support their local schools and communities," said David Serlo, CEO of PSCU.
