SAN FRANCISCO – Visa USA, the number one card brand, has weighed in with its response to the earthquake and tsunamis that have ravaged Southeast Asia. The United Nations believes 155,000 people in 12 nations died in the wave flooding. Visa announced that it will donate $1 million to the relief effort and will waive the fees on donations made to the tsunami relief funds of CARE USA, the American Red Cross, Mercy Corps, Oxfam America and Save The Children USA. Visa also announced it will provide a dollar for dollar match on its employees’ donations to these five organizations. MasterCard International moved in the same direction as well. As of January 7, the number two card brand, headquartered in Purchase, New York, announced it would waive the fees for tsunami relief. MasterCard’s groups include the American Red Cross, Save the Children, and CARE USA, but also includes AmeriCares, and UNICEF. In addition, MasterCard announced it would double-match employee contributions to the South East Asia disaster relief funds of the American Red Cross, the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Society, or AmeriCares. Disaster relief contributions by employees to other humanitarian organizations are matched dollar-for-dollar, the card brand said.
