WASHINGTON-CUNA is lining up a number of top-ranking officials around Washington who have an impact on credit unions to speak at CUNA’s Governmental Affairs Conference, scheduled for Feb. 27-March 2. Both NCUA Board Members, Chairman JoAnn Johnson and Debbie Matz, are signed on to address attendees. Participants will also hear from House Financial Services Committee Chairman Mike Oxley (R-Ohio) and Ranking Member Barney Frank (D-Mass.), as well as Congressman John Linder (R-Ga.). Federal Reserve Governor Mark Olson will also be there. Political pundits William Kristol and Mark Shields will talk to the group. CUNA previously announced that retired General Tommy Franks would serve as a featured speaker. Registration is running a bit ahead of 2004, according to CUNA Vice President of Communications and Media Outreach Pat Keefe. As of Jan. 5, CUNA had 1,162 credit union officials registered as opposed to 1,066 for the same time last year. The number of guests is virtually the same and CUNA expects another sellout exhibit hall, he said. Keefe said CUNA believes registrations may be up “because the intensity of the bankers’ attacks are motivating more CUs to come to Washington.”
