WASHINGTON-Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) gave credit unions an early Christmas present this year wrapped in a letter to Texas Credit Union League President and CEO Dick Ensweiler. Hutchison’s letter thanked Ensweiler for a letter he wrote her office on credit unions’ tax exemption and offered up her support. “Credit unions play an important role in our financial and depository systems by supplying valuable lending opportunities to the families and small businesses they serve.” she wrote in her Dec. 7 response. “I support maintaining the tax-exempt status of not-for-profit credit unions, because we must work to lower the burden of taxation on Americans, not increase it.” Hutchison said the lines of communication between the league and her office are open in the future for important credit union issues.
