COLUMBIA, Md. – After six years with the Maryland Credit Union League in various executive positions, Mike Marschall closed that chapter of his career last month to work at the law firm of Williams, Gautier, Gwynn and Deloach. During his tenure with the Maryland League, Marschall witnessed and was involved in several events critical to the state's credit unions. As executive vice president/director of governmental affairs, he closely tracked the progress of the legislative-mandated 15-member "Task Force to Study the Modernization of Credit Union Law" which made recommendations for modernizing the state's credit union law. That effort culminated in the passage of a new state credit union law which among its provisions allowed a non-Maryland insurance company to apply for permission from the state regulator to offer private insurance in the state. In 2003, the state regulator approved American Share Insurance's application to provide primary share insurance to the state's 11 state-chartered CUs. When former League president Bob Steil's contract wasn't renewed in April 2003, Marschall was chosen as the acting president and worked in that capacity for most of the year. The president/CEO's spot was eventually filled by Mike Beall, manager of governmental affairs and partnerships at the World Council of Credit Unions' Washington, D.C. office. At the same time, Marschall was named chief operating officer and general counsel. Marschall's last day with the Maryland Credit Union League was Nov. 24.
