Service One Credit Union, Bowling Green, Ky., has hosted an American Red Cross Blood Drive. Credit union staffers and members helped the Red Cross secure 23 useable units of blood. This year, the Tennessee Valley Region Red Cross will ship more than 138,000 pints of blood to area hospital patients. To meet these needs, 800 people must donate each weekday and an additional 430 people must volunteer to donate each weekend. Wescom Credit Union, Pasadena, Calif., has lent staffers' ears and voices to help Southern California Public Radio station, 89.3 KPCC's in its $1.3 million Fall Pledge Drive. In recognition of the credit union's ongoing underwriting of programming and its provision of volunteers for the pledge drive, the day was declared “Wescom Day” at the station. KPCC President Bill Davis was also heard on air acknowledging Wescom's contributions to the station. Merck, Sharp & Dohme Federal Credit Union, North Wales, Pa., has donated 24 computers to Computers for School, a nonprofit organization committed to reuse of computer equipment. Donated computers are refurbished and placed in schools, nonprofit organizations or need-based homes. Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union, Tenn., was one of two presenting sponsors of the Komen Knoxville Race for the Cure. Over 500 staffers, members, and their families participated in event. KTVAECU not only staffed a booth at the start/finish site but also manned a water station with entertainment in front of the main branch along the race route. The Komen Knoxville Race for the Cure attracted over 10,000 participants from the east Tennessee area. Proceeds raised go toward breast cancer research. California Credit Union League Coalition Against Hunger, San Francisco, united Bay Area credit unions in the fight of ending hunger here. Over 25 volunteers from several credit unions boxed over 2,400 pounds of pears to be distributed this holiday season. Insight Financial Credit Union, Orlando, Fla., has donated $20,000 to the American Cancer Society during the 2004 “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” Walk for a Cure. Insight Financial was privileged to be a flagship sponsor for this event, with a majority of its contribution coming from member and employee donations. This is the second year for Insight Financial employees to participate in the “Making Strides” walk. Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the California Credit Union League, San Jose, has donated over 50 new teddy bears to the San Jose Fire Fighters Burn Foundation. The bears are distributed to children in the Burn Foundation hospital to provide comfort and help in recovery.
