WESTBROOK, Me. – In separate visits to credit union events held during Credit Union Week, both of Maine's Congressmen had kind words for Maine's credit unions and their contributions to Maine consumers. During a visit to Portland Regional Federal Credit Union, First District Congressman Tom Allen spoke to members, staff and volunteers about "the passion and love that people have for their credit union and that is pretty extraordinary for people to say about any business or organization, especially a financial institution." In a speech at the Kennebec Valley Chapter of Credit Unions' annual CU Week Meeting, Second District Congressman Mike Michaud called credit unions "a vital part of Maine's economy. Without credit unions, many Maine consumers would not have access to loans and other financial services. I am proud that I only do business with a credit union and have for more than 30 years," said Michaud. He is a former CU volunteer and an honorary board member of Eastmill FCU in East Millinocket. Earlier this year, Maine was the only state to have both of its congressmen sign on as co-sponsors of CURIA legislation that would help credit unions to better serve their members.
