BOULDER, Colo. – Free document shredding looks to be a popular service with members, according to U of C Federal Credit Union. The Boulder CU said for the third time in a year it has offered the service at one of its branches under an arrangement with Shred It, a firm based in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. The $670 million U of C said it offers the shredding service as part of its “RealityCheck” program to provide consumers information in helping safeguard against identity theft. The CU has been holding seminars on ID theft and on privacy. Under the arrangement, Shred It last month brought in two mobile document destruction trucks and parked them at the CU’s Diagonal branch with individuals allowed to dump medical records, insurance forms, bank statements and other paper items into the vehicles. “Credit union members and Boulder County residents may bring up to three, copy-paper size boxes of sensitive personal documents for disposal,” said a news release. “A certificate of destruction will be provided and all shredded material will be recycled.” U of C said it is the first Colorado CU to hook up with Shred It though others have considered the service. Warren FCU in Cheyenne, Wyo. is also offering the service.
