NEW YORK-During the American Bankers Association's recent annual convention, the organization elected SouthTrust Bank (Virginia Beach, Va.) Executive Vice President for Community Bank Development Elizabeth Duke as its new chairman. "I owe a debt of gratitude to the hundreds of thousands of women in this industry. There never could have been a first woman chairman, if there hadn't been so many talented, hard-working women challenging barriers every day," Duke said. She has worked a full range of community banking jobs from part-time/drive through teller to CEO. Duke replaces outgoing ABA Chairman C. Kendric Fergeson, chairman of NBanC in Altus, Okla. According to CUNA's online news service, News Now, Duke placed fighting the "tax-free status of credit unions and the expansion of their charter" at the top of her agenda.
