BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho Credit Union League is joining a handful of its sister leagues in urging members to adopt the anti-robbery `no hats, hoods, sunglasses” policy in cooperation with law enforcement. “We are hoping to get more of our credit unions to take part by International Credit Union Day on Oct. 21,” said Deborah Zastrow, education specialist for the league. A handful of CUs in Idaho Falls, Boise and Pocatello have already launched the program “and report positive feedback” from staff, said Zastrow noting the FBI, Idaho State Police and local agencies have been highly supportive. Credit unions were urged to also make contact with local media to hold press briefings to help in familiarize the public with the program aimed at curbing robberies. While the problem is not severe in Idaho, “we want to start this now before we have a problem,” said Zastrow. The “no hats” rule debuted more than a year ago at the Missouri Credit Union League, with South Carolina, Ohio and Delaware among leagues that have also launched programs for their member CUs. Zastrow noted that robberies remain a keen issue in urban areas but rural CUs have opted out of the program since “too many farmers come in with baseball hats” and asking them to remove them would be impractical, she said. Zastrow said work with Idaho CUs on the policy began last January following issuance of law enforcement security reports. She said the issue came up recently again during a directors conference in Denver sponsored by the American Association of Credit Union Leagues.
