NEW YORK – More than 100 people turned out for the combined grand opening of the Lower East Side People's Federal Credit Union's very first branch, on the ground floor of a new cooperative housing effort. The $13 million credit union's opening took place in conjunction with the opening of Sweet Things Bake Shop, a community entrepreneurial venture run by the Lower Eastside Girls Club. "The Girls Club is part of our field of membership and has the girls open up savings accounts with us," explained Ivonne Lopez, marketing director for the credit union. "We both got this opportunity for very low rent space in a nicely renovated building from the non-profit housing organization that renovated the space." The building has housing units on the levels above the credit union and bakery, Lopez explained. Eve Claxton, director of public relations for the Girls Club, said the organization hoped in the future to be able to finance a new building project with the credit union.
