WASHINGTON-House Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Barney Frank (D-Mass.) thanked credit unions for not causing extra work for him and his staff back in the district. “One of the things that marks the business I’m in is we only hear from people when there are problems.” he said. “I cannot remember getting any complaints from anyone in the credit union system.” However, Frank said he absolutely hears from credit unions when a change to the legal structure under which they operate is necessary. “You help in a very serious way to validate belief in democracy,” he added, explaining that credit unions do not have a lot of money to throw around but they do have grassroots power. For example, Frank said, the banks “are very interest in changing the laws to your disadvantage,” but credit unions win every time overwhelmingly, not by funds but by votes. He reassured the credit unions that though some helpful things may not happen for credit unions, “Nothing bad is going to happen to you.”
