ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Recognizing the history and contributions of Native Alaskans should be part of the high schools' curriculum here, Bill Peters, an executive at Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, has vowed to support Native Alaskan history in the schools' curriculum. Peters is running for a seat on the local school board. He said he would find ways to fund the history class including hiring the appropriate teachers to teach it. Two other candidates have also advocated teaching Native Alaskan history in high schools as well as in elementary and middle school classrooms. Peters ran for the school board last year but lost by one vote. The two candidates with the most votes will be elected to a three-year term on a seven-member board. Alaska USA FCU is the state's largest with more than 264,000 members and $2.4 billion in assets.
