WASHINGTON-At a gathering on Cannon Terrace outside Cannon House Office Building on Capitol Hill, CUNA President and CEO Dan Mica rallied the credit union troops for a full day on congressional meetings during the climax of the trade’s National Hike the Hill month. “Pull out that Kerry/Bush letter ad,” he advised. “It’s not Democratic. It’s not Republican. It’s American.” In the end, Mica said, CUNA wanted to put together a head count of which congressmen were on the record in support of credit unions’ tax exemption. Those who had not received solid commitments from their representatives, he urged to visit in the districts and attend local meetings to garner that support. “Our cause is just,” Mica stated. “We do wear the white hats.” CUNA Vice President of Communications and Media Outreach Pat Keefe said the association had heard from some members that there was not a bill pending, so why work the issue. The point is to nip that scenario in the bud to begin with, he said. The gathering was originally called for a chance to meet with Congressman Peter King (R-N.Y.) of the House Financial Services Committee, but he was unexpectedly called away at the last minute.
