JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Thanks to HealthAmerica Credit Union, the total number of credit unions offering Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) is now two. The $74 million credit union joins Wichita, Kansas-based Mid-American CU as the second credit union in the nation to offer HSAs. HSAs are tax-free savings accounts that can be used to pay for medical expenses including prescription and over-the-counter drugs incurred by individuals, spouses, or dependents. The annual deductible must be at least $1,000 for individual coverage, and at least $2,000 for family coverage. Unused HSA money rolls over from year to year and can then be used to pay for medical care up to the plan’s deductible. Health savings accounts have been hailed by many as a way to reduce health care costs and give consumers greater control over their own health care. Only a handful of banks currently offer HSAs.
