Citizens Equity First Credit Union, Peoria, Ill., has sponsored the tenth annual "Partners in Peace" Awards Luncheon benefiting The Center for Prevention of Abuse. This event recognizes individuals in Central Illinois who have furthered The Center's mission of eliminating interpersonal abuse and violence in the community. The keynote speaker for the event was Olympia Dukakis, best known for her award winning performances in Moonstruck and Steel Magnolias. The over $10,000 raised will be used to provide services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and abuse, elder abuse, neglect and exploitation, and violence prevention programming. Tampa Bay Federal Credit Union, Fla., has donated $5,000 to Hillsborough Community College. The endowment supports the credit union's Ed DeBusk Scholarship for Business majors. NRL Federal Credit Union, has raised over $700 for Children's National Medical Center. Through a recent fundraiser members purchased over 250 dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts. A silent auction fundraiser is scheduled for early next year. Metropolitan Area Credit Union Management Association, Washington D.C., has donated $2,000, raised at the association's annual golf outing, to the Maryland Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, a global leader in the fight against breast cancer. Founded in 1958, MACUMA is a trade association comprised of over 400 Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Maryland credit union CEOs, senior executives and vendor-partners. The organization is dedicated to professional development through education and interaction. Baxter Credit Union, Vernon Hills, Ill., has donated a total of $16,071.71 to the American Cancer Society. The funds will be used to further research efforts. In 1946, 25% of cancer patients survived five years after diagnosis. According to the American Cancer Society, with the help of BCU, and many other supporters, today's survival rate is 60%. Pan Am Horizons Federal Credit Union, Miami, employees and their families loaded a trailer full of food, supplies and endless energy to drive across the state to help the victims of Hurricane Charley. The representatives of PAHFCU also helped clean up the yard of a resident of Port Charlotte who was recently had open heart surgery. After clearing the debris from the yard, they set up camp on an open corner and offered a hot meal of hamburgers and hot dogs to local residents along with food, water and other supplies they had with them. Edwards Federal Credit Union, Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., and Grace Resource Center have teamed up to help fight hunger in the Antelope Valley. Edwards FCU agreed to donate $5 to Grace Resource Center for every new account that was opened in a month, up to at least $2,500. Some 747 new accounts were opened during the promotion. Affinity Federal Credit Union, Basking Ridge, N.J., has raised $38,000 for the Adult Day Center of Somerset County (ADC) during its 7th annual Affinity Golf Invitational. The money will go toward the ADC Comprehensive Capital Campaign for a new facility that will enable ADC to meet the growing needs of the community. Since its inception, the Affinity Golf Invitational has raised $178,000 to benefit local, community-based organizations and small credit unions in need of financial assistance.
