ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Jean Howard, a community leader in Rochester, N.Y., will address the lunch crowd at NCUA’s Partnering and Leadership Successes workshop on Oct. 11. Howard is executive director of Wilson Commencement Park, a welfare-to-work program, in Rochester that offers a wide array of services like job search assistance, life counseling, and affordable housing with on-site childcare. It reaches more than 2,000 low-income, single parents and children each year. Howard is a strong supporter of programs that help low-income and minority families, many of whom are underserved by traditional financial institutions, make appropriate financial choices. “Ms. Howard’s innovative programs have helped thousands of the neediest people in her community become financially self-sufficient,” Matz said. “This is exactly what many credit unions are working to do in reaching out to the underserved in their communities.” In her 14 years with WCP, Howard has built the organization from a small program into a nationally recognized model for community collaboration. The PALS workshop, entitled “Serving the Underserved Without Losing Your Bottom Line,” will feature two panels of credit union officials discussing innovations that effectively meet the needs of the underserved. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) will deliver the keynote address and take questions. The workshop will be co-hosted by The Summit Federal Credit Union in Rochester, NAFCU, the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, and the New York State Credit Union League.
