TALLAHASEE, Fla. – The Florida Credit Union League has distributed more than $71,000 to the victims of Hurricane Charley, $22,000 of which was distributed in $500 grants with an additional 31 such grants in the pipeline. According to Mark Ivester, vice president of communications for the League, the fund the League had established at the Florida Credit Union Foundation for hurricane victims had pledges for just over $76,000 as of the close of business August 30. Ivester said the grantmaking thus far has represented "phase 1″ of the League's planned activity. The second phase, which will include asking applicants to describe their needs in more detail, will begin shortly. In the meantime, the League said it would continue to help Florida credit unions prepare for Frances, which has already been classified as a Category 4 storm.
