ARLINGTON, Va.-Individuals are using the credit union name in an attempt to dupe consumers out of their hard-earned money again, NASCUS reported. Criminals are using the guise of a credit union to scam people out of $300. In this most recent incident, individuals, supposedly representing "National Spirit Credit Union," have attempted to place advertisements in North Carolina newspapers offering unsuspecting consumers credit cards. The 800-number in the advertisement takes the caller to a `member service representative' who requests $298.00 to open the VISA account. There are no state or federal credit unions by that name, according to NASCUS. The group urged their members to watch local papers for suspicious ads and report them to NASCUS and their state regulator.
