TALLAHASEE, Fla. – Almost $38,000 has been pledged so far to the fund that the Florida Credit Union League has established to help credit union employees in Florida overcome their in come cases devastating damage from Hurricane Charley, according to the League. The League has begun to receive requests for assistance daily including one from a VISTA FCU employee in dire straits. The employee, a single mother of four has been without power since the storm and was forced to live in a hotel for several days to provide shelter for herself and her children. The hotel stay quickly drained her resources and she reacted very emotionally when told the League would help her. Disney, the sponsoring company of VISTA FCU, also contacted the woman and provided living arrangements for the immediate future at one of Disney’s properties. Connie Stoutamire, who manages the Florida Credit Union Foundation where the relief fund was established, said “After hearing a story like this, and knowing there are more like this in the same predicament, I am pleased the League can help in this small way. Someone who was at their wit’s end can now help her family cope.”
