NEW YORK-Members of the New York congressional delegation and credit unions will be honored for their commitment to protecting children during the Republican National Convention this week. On Aug. 30, CUNA, the New York State Credit Union League, Empire Corporate FCU and U.S. Central Credit Union will host a reception at Montauk Credit Union for lawmakers and credit unions working with the National Child Identification Program. Ed Smart, father of recovered abductee Elizabeth Smart, will be among the special guests, as well as Congressman Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.) and others representing New York in Congress are expected to attend. The National Child ID Program works to prevent child abductions and assist in locating runaway children. The program distributes inkless fingerprinting kits that can be stored in the families’ homes. Credit unions hope to distribute up to 40,000 in the New York area during the convention. Already, 14 million kits have been distributed nationwide, but the group would like to see 60 million go out, approximately one for every child in the country.
