Looking back 12 years ago finds credit unions battered by Hurricane Andrew. The storm left 50,000 people homeless in greater Miami and credit unions inundated with requests for relief. Some 38 credit unions in Florida were unable to check in with the Florida Credit Union League for days as the 160-mile per hour winds left power outages, downed phone lines, and debris in its wake. "We've been having problems with communications," said Bob Loftus, director of public and congressional affairs for NCUA. "Record-keeping may be the least of some credit union's problems and for those hardest hit 208 assistance is a possibility, although granted it is designed for financial problems more than disasters. Region III has its hands full." That issue also finds CUNA issuing its Regulatory FOCUS Task Force Final Report. The report emphasizes the need to have consistent application among all examiners and across all regions in credit union examinations and regulation with a special emphasis placed on the problems facing small credit unions. "We are not trying to micromanage NCUA.we are trying to produce recommendations that we think will be helpful to improve the whole process. It's really nothing more than that; we are not trying to make any demands," said Task Force Chairman/Virginia Credit Union League President Eugene Farley.
