ALEXANDRIA, Va.- Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) will keynote the Partnering and Leadership Successes workshop on Oct. 11 in Rochester, N.Y., NCUA Board Member Debbie Matz announced recently. The free workshop is entitled, "Serving the Underserved Without Losing Your Bottom Line." Speakers at the workshop will explain several useful products and services aimed at bringing the underserved into the fold, such as risk-based loans, payday loan alternatives, financial education, micro-business loans, affordable mortgages, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, and international remittances. Senator Clinton said of the non-profit financial cooperatives, "Credit unions continue to be great partners in reaching out to the underserved, helping small businesses, families and individuals with the financial assistance they need. Workshops like this are truly valuable in connecting industry members with each other and with the communities they serve." "We are honored to have Senator Clinton participate in a PALS workshop," Matz stated. "This workshop is inspired by New York credit union leaders who will share their success stories in serving underserved areas. Across the State, credit unions are building valuable relationships with new members – including immigrants who are using insured financial institutions for the first time; small business owners who are finally gaining access to needed capital; and predatory lending victims who are learning to break their cycle of debt and despair." The Summit Federal Credit Union in Rochester, NAFCU, the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, and the New York State Credit Union League are co-hosting the workshop. Potential partners from organizations based in underserved communities were also invited to share their ideas and network with credit union officials.
