SAN DIEGO – After some two years, North Island Credit Union Senior Vice President of Military Relations and Community Development Roger McTighe finally got to welcome the USS Ronald Reagan to its new home port. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier cruised into San Diego Bay as it completed its five-month journey to its new berth at North Island Naval Air Station. McTighe was named chairman of the "Welcome to San Diego" committee in 2002. It was his job to coordinate 40 committee members responsible for everything from logistics and corporate sponsorships to galas and picnics. The "Welcome to San Diego" events covered many venues, all intended to get San Diego's newest residents familiar with "America's Finest City". McTighe, a retired naval officer and aviator with a total of 30 years of active service, is a veteran at making sailors feel at home in a new port. He has served as chairman of the "Welcome to San Diego" committee for the USS John C. Stennis and USS Nimitz. His efforts have helped more than 10,000 military members and their families' transition to San Diego, creating strong relationships between service members and the community. Last year, McTighe was recognized as an outstanding veteran and community supporter by the Veterans Memorial Center and Museum.
