GREENSBORO, N.C. – The $2.6 billion First Carolina Corporate Credit Union has rounded out its speaker list for its third annual 2004 Financial Conference set for Sept.16-17. Among the speakers are Chris Low, chief economist for FTN Financial, the investment arm of First Tennessee Bank National Association. Low appears often on Bloomberg TV and will give his take on economic issues and the financial markets. A banker is also in the ranks. Wachovia Bank, N.A. Chief Economist Dr. John Silvia will address the “Regional Economic Outlook.” Before joining Wachovia, Silvia was a senior economist for the U.S. Senate Joint Economic Committee; and chief economist for the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Jim DeMasi, principal and first vice president for Legg Mason Wood Walker’s financial institution clients, will discuss portfolio strategies for today’s environment. DeMasi is a former bank examiner for the FDIC. A number of credit union industry speakers will also be on hand, including NAFCU SVP/General Counsel Bill Donovan; Mark Schieffer, director of advisory services for ALM First Financial Services; and Karen Pease, managing director for U.S. Central Credit Union’s Charlie Mac CUSO, which has become increasingly popular among corporates. Charlie Mac is a way for corporates to help credit unions sell off jumbo mortgages and auto loans.
