SALT LAKE CITY-To show its support of Children's Miracle Network in a major way, Mountain America Federal Credit Union has announced its first "intermountain west" golf tournament next month following the lead of a Portland CU which has pioneered the charity event. "We've long been one of the sponsors of First Technology's celebrity golf tournament and we decided we should hold one of our own," explained Fred Nydegger, senior vice president and chief lobbyist for Mountain America FCU referring to the Beaverton.Ore.-based First Tech's golf tournament for CMN held July 26 in Portland. That fund-raiser brought in a record $300,000 for the CUNA-backed charity and Mountain America said it felt one serving Rocky Mountain states could easily do as well. Like First Tech's much-publicized event, Mountain America said it too would bring in sports celebrities but also add media dignitaries from Salt Lake TV and radio stations. Mountain America said also it would be inviting many CU vendors to put up sponsorships. Mountain America's golf tournament is being called "Swing for the Kids Celebrity Classic" and will be held at the Jeremy Ranch and Golf Club on Sept. 20. Proceeds from the event would go toward the Primary Children's Miracle Center, a leading Salt Lake hospital caring for youngsters.
