BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Minnesota’s “Fishing Hat Bandit” is still at large, and Minnesota Credit Union Network President/CEO Kevin Chandler was recently interviewed by a local CBS affiliate about the string of robberies the elusive bandit is alleged to have committed. Nicknamed the “Fishing Hat Bandit” by the FBI, the culprit has struck five banks and nine credit unions in the St. Paul area, some twice, since June 6, 2003. He recently committed his 14th Minnesota robbery in over a year’s time. Chandler told WCCO Television that “any robbery is an extremely dangerous situation. When you have somebody that seems to be getting more brazen and bold, it obviously heightens the tension level among credit union employees.” Thus far, said the MCUN, the suspect has targeted smaller credit unions or banks, “using a fast, low-key approach.” The FBI is currently searching for the suspect and pursuing leads. He’s described as being a white male approximately 6-feet tall, weighs between 170-190 pounds, wears sunglasses, a floppy hat, and drives a green car. MCUN is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
