DAVENPORT, Iowa – Three financial institutions including one credit union and two banks were robbed Aug. 4 during campaign stops in town by President Bush and Sen. John Kerry. First hit at 10:45 a.m. was Ralston and Community CU. A suspect in that robbery was apprehended a short while later. Then at 11:23 a.m., a second robbery was committed at the First National Bank by a suspect described as “a white man, 35, with a thin build.” At 11:45 a.m., a man robbed the Southeast National Bank. That suspect is still at large, but police said a description of the suspect matched that of an armed robbery suspect at Alcoa Employees and Community CU on July 22 – “a black man in his late teens or early 20s with orange hair.” Police speculated that the robbers counted on the presidential candidates’ in-town visits would be distractions.
