WASHINGTON – The Consumer Federation of America, which says some financial institutions are getting too aggressive in their marketing of overdraft programs, did a study that included about 25 CUs of how financials advertised their OD service on their Web sites. Credit unions weren't the only financials studied, as another 25 were banks or thrifts. The CFA said that of the 50 sites visited, 41 actually “advertised” the service. It said it found a number of aggressive marketing statements to entice consumers into writing overdrafts. It believes 78% of those advertising the product used inappropriate language. Here are some of the statements that the CFA thought went too far: *”run short on cash between paydays?” *”lend a hand when finances are tight?” *”provide members with an excellent alternative to expensive payday lending loan or check cashing outlets” *”in the event you become overdrawn after.a sudden need for cash” *”even if you don't have funds available” *”running a little thin right before payday” It's unclear which of these are pulled from bank sites and which from CU sites, though at least one of these (the one referencing “members”) is from a CU site.
