JOHNSTON, Iowa – There isn’t a press pass around that will get Credit Union Times in to hear the speech given by former NCUA Chairman Norman D’Amours at an upcoming banker meeting. Credit Union Times has been informed by the Iowa Bankers Association that it is banned from covering D’Amours’ speech scheduled to happen at the group’s 118th Annual Convention scheduled for Sept. 19-21 in Des Moines, Iowa. D’Amours is scheduled to speak on Sept. 21 and present “an interesting viewpoint of credit unions today,” according to the agenda for the event. The Iowa Bankers Association asked D’Amours if he would have a problem with Credit Union Times covering the event – apparently he did. The association would not comment on what he said, but offered the following: “As Iowa’s premier banking association, we invited Mr. D’Amours to the benefit of our banker members and we believe a report in the Credit Union Times would not benefit our banker members,” said Ben Hildebrandt, director of public relations for the Iowa Bankers Association. Credit Union Times regularly covers banking events and has never before been banned from covering a specific speaker.
