MADISON, Wis. – For 30 days at least there will be no picketing by union employees and the union's corporate campaign will be put on hold. Office of Professional Employees International Union President Michael Goodwin and CUNA Mutual President/CEO Mike Kitchen held a meeting on July 8 to discuss the labor situation at the company. One outcome of the meeting was a 30-day cooling off period whereby all picketing will halt as well as the union's corporate campaign. A corporate campaign is a labor tactic to put pressure on employers through things such as contacting the employer's clients (which this union has done), make the dispute as public as possible through picketing and the media, and other techniques. The two parties have still been unable to reach a contract agreement. The union's last contract expired March 31. Just recently, CUNA Mutual presented the union with a new proposal, which the union has still not made a formal decision on. Over 1,400 CUNA Mutual employees are members of OPEIU Local 39.
