HARRISBURG, Pa. – One month after the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association launched its “Show Your True Colors” statewide photo contest and asked credit unions to send photos that demonstrate their community involvement, the contest judges announced their winners. The overall winner of the photo contest was SB1 FCU, Philadelphia, for its Habitat for Humanity picture. The Most Humorous Award went to Belco Community CU. The judges recognized 21 other credit unions for their efforts as well with awards with names such as the “Midas Touch Award,” “Most Patriotic Award,” and “Credit Unions Care for Kids Award.” Instead of offering $1,000 for first place, the winner of the PCUA’s contest won PCUA staff time to be donated to the community service work of the winner’s choice. The contest was initiated in response to the $1,000 bounty offered by the American Bankers Association and two other national bank trade groups to the banker who could come up with “the best photographic evidence of credit unions over-reaching.” The PCUA submitted the over 100 captioned photos it received to the ABA with a statement from President/CEO Jim McCormack that read: “As you can tell by the volume and diversity of activities presented throughout this compilation, Pennsylvania credit unions clearly are more than just financial service providers. Rather, we are actively involved in community service in virtually every community throughout our great state. In the future, we hope to continue to go above and beyond our enumerated powers to help those in need and to provide a better quality of life for every individual we are able to touch. McCormack also suggested that if all or part of the PCUA’s submission were to win the ABA’s contest, the bankers should donate the $1,000 prize to the charity of their choice.
