ALEXANDRIA, Va.-When then-NCUA Chairman Roger Jepsen relocated the NCUA headquarters from Washington, D.C. in close proximity to the other financial regulators and the White House to Alexandria, Va., the move was not very popular. However, the choice has proven wise over time and a great investment. NCUA does not pay taxes on 151,419 square feet of the building, which also houses Region II’s offices, according to a real estate assessment. The agency also leases another 19,371 square feet to Merrill Lynch and owns 294 parking spaces in the garage below. NCUA’s headquarters has received a number of updates over the years from basic building maintenance, as seen in the photos below, to new high-tech phone lines and a metal detector in the lobby as many federal agencies have.
