ALEXANDRIA, Va. – NCUA sent out an Information Technology Security Alert on July 2 warning credit unions of potential vulnerabilities in Microsoft products that could leave them open to cyber attacks. NCUA particularly warned about known security holes in Microsoft’s Internet Information Server and its Web browser, Internet Explorer. The Explorer flaws are troubling because they involve attacks where users unknowingly download software from an infected site that can compromise user account access information, such as user names and passwords. NCUA advised credit unions to keep a close watch on their servers for unusual activity; to monitor vendor and security Web sites for applying patches; and for those CUs offering online banking to monitor FSS-ISAC’s Web site (www.fsisac.com), which provides updates and tips for identifying cyber attacks.
